Fr Professor Philip is Professor and Sir Thomas More Chair of Engineering Ethics of Seaver College of Science and Engineering, Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles.

“New Year for the Good City – Creativity and Engineering” The presentation will offer reflections on,--

n     the changing landscape of globalization

n     a more comprehensive understanding of sustainability, and

n     the Jesuit heritage as a source for engineering a metropolis that can call itself good

Fr Professor Philip is witty and passionate. His work and what he is interested in as the engineering profession’s obligation, with aims and targets

-        to secure the welfare of the public;

-        to anticipate, analyze and reduce risk; indeed, to engage in forensic examination;

-        to facilitate corporate social responsibility;

-        to delimit and design approaches to sustainability

He is currently working on how do Chinese engineers work with these international parameters of professional practice.

Operative as the background for this are the history and principles of Catholic Social Teaching.

One of his professional goals is to set up an engineering ethics center that would create and distribute materials (cases, translations of terms, and stories of key persons provided on the web…) that would be relevant to professional practice in China. Also such a center would be a locus from which training could be offered. The center could be bricks and mortar or www.
