Eulogy for Lung Jai
by Eugene Chok
On a personal note, I met Joe Lung (for the first & last time) two years ago in Hong Kong over Lunch with the classmates. My first impression of him was the same as everyone else, a sad one. For the cursed ailment has eroded his physical well being and sucked the life force out of what was once a proud, feisty and intelligent young man that was on top of the world.
That impression changed very rapidly soon afterwards. For I perceived that replacing this dynamic personality was a soft spoken gentle human being that was quietly optimistic and who had a deep appreciation of the finer values of life. It is this quality that attracted my attention more than his dying condition. During that 90 minutes of visit, not once did he display any negative sentiments of fear, anger and resentment to life for dealing him such an awful hand.
I came away from that meeting feeling quite ashamed. I was ashamed of the manner that I had conducted my life in the face of adversity. For many times I have crumbled and plunged into the dark pit of despair, self pity and self destructive tendencies.
But not Joe.
From the time that he left Wah Yan to the point of his passing, he has grown from a mischievous school boy into a beautiful wise man that experienced and witnessed life in its full glory. It is this magnetic quality, this undaunting spirit to meet life's adversity head on that has won the admiration of his fellow classmates. Lung Jai you are our hero.
We look forward to being with you again in the next realm. Till then, from this side of life, Class of 67 bids farewell to one of its finest and most beloved brothers. We shall miss you deeply. Take care and may the Good Lord be with you always.
Amen
